The MuRberts

After years of dreaming and saving we took the leap to make our sabbatical year a reality. Jon quit his job, we unenrolled the kids from school and we set out for a year of travel starting January 1, 2022.

This blog is our travel journal as well as our way of keeping friends, family, and any other interested parties up to date with our adventures. Follow along with us as we explore what we can learn in a year of world travel.

  • Jon

Jon made the courageous leap of taking a personal sabbatical year from his career to see the world with his family. Jon is working out the behind the scenes trip logistics and more tedious aspects of making sure this trip runs smoothly.

Most interested in: Food and culture. (and draining the kids of energy by bedtime!)

Looking forward to: Appreciating the uniqueness of each place we will be visiting and being able to focus on the more important things in life.

  • Lauren

A stay at home mom for the past 10 years, Lauren is excited to take her job on the road. She is essential for setting our trip itinerary ensuring that it will appeal to each member of the family while keeping us on a manageable pace and within a reasonable budget.

Most interested in: The latest place she’s researching.

Looking forward to: Unrushed quality time with the family.

  • Larson

This 10-year-old loves video games, hiking, and futbol. Lars is a great brother to his little sisters and takes them under his wing to comprehend and interpret things for context. Always curious, we think that Larson may have a penchant for new languages.

Most interested in: Going to Japan and Africa.

Looking forward to: Exploring and being adventurous.

  • Louise

As a soon to be 8 year old, she equally loves candy, playing outside, and her family. Lulu’s self-awareness and kindness will give her an appreciation for the different worlds that will be around her.

Most interested in: Going to the Galápagos Islands.

Looking forward to: Meeting up with family and friends along the way.

  • Colette

Coco is the toughest 6-year old we know; able to carry a 6kg pack and walk 8 miles with little complaining. Her sharp wit and eye for art will be exciting to watch in the coming year.

Most interested in: Seeing the northern lights

Looking forward to: Being with my family.
